The President of the House of Representatives, Mr Adamos Adamou, today exercised his right to vote in the 2021 Parliamentary Elections, in Agios Ioannis Lyceum, in Lemesos.

After casting his vote, Mr Adamou made the following statement: “Today is a celebration of democracy. It’s not us who are supposed to talk, it’s the people. People followed the pre-election campaign, and today is their day. They are going to choose those they think that they can serve them. As far as the problems of civil society are concerned, we have a number of problems. In my short term, as President of the House of Representatives, I have tried to promote and I have indeed promoted some of the issues. But there are also many others, which should be dealt with as soon as the new Parliament is sworn in. There are many issues and the newly elected Members, to whom I wish endurance and patience, must address many bills that have been left unfinished. That is why I wish everyone good luck with their vote. I call on the citizens once again to come and vote. Abstention is not a solution and everyone must understand this. Because those who do not go to vote allow the rest to vote for those who may not represent all of the citizens. It is imperative that citizens come to vote. We say it every year, we say it over time for many years, but you can see that abstention instead of declining is rising. This does not honor the state and does not honor us as citizens. Citizens should come and exercise their right to vote. They should choose those who think they can serve the country better.

Asked by a journalist about the message he would like to send to the new MPs who will replace those who will either not be elected or leave, as second in rank in the Republic of Cyprus, the President of the House of Representatives replied: “I think I was clear in my original statement. What I said at the outset applies to all Members, both old and new, who will enter Parliament. We must all keep in mind that we are servants of the people and that is how we should behave. We don't take a seat and sit on a chair and say that the goal is achieved. No aim is achieved. The aim will be achieved when we come close to the people, their problems and when we provide solutions through the Parliament”.
